Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company Performance Calendar

Audience Comments from our Year of the Tiger Performance at NJPAC

"Perfect is the one word I would use to describe the dance company. Everything is wonderful. I love both the traditional themes and the modern Avent-garde dances. The costumes are beautiful. I enjoyed how you blend both traditional plus modern and loved the music and the Asian Indian influences. My favorite dance and costume was the Way of Five-Earth. Magnificent!

The Three Riddles of Turandot, by celebrated Chinese-American choreographer Nai-Ni Chen, is a neoclassical ballet that breathes life into the ancient Chinese legend about icy Princess Turandot who holds all suitors at bay by decreeing that she will only marry a man who can solve three riddles. Set to Puccini's famous score this Turandot features dramatic dance and pantomime. The Star-Ledger called it "a ballet of compelling mystery and emotional depth...a sumptuously theatrical production."

Recent Residency

In January, Wei Chen, Guest Chinese Dance Choreographer, worked with the first graders of Mackay School in Tenafly, NJ. During her time with the students, Wei introduced them to the fundamental elements of Chinese dance and culture, focusing on the Lunar New Year celebration. The students learned the characteristics, movements and gestures of Chinese dance and were introduced to new music. They also created their own traditional props for use in Chinese dance, including fans and tiger masks. The residency culminated with a performance by the students for their parents and classmates. The principal and teachers of the school were very supportive and enthusiastic throughout the entire residency.
