Supporting dance education and community

Each year we hold an annual festival in New York City with work by 30-40 choreographers from around the globe.  At each festival we honor two master choreographers from the past and include performances of their work along with emerging choreographers ranging from modern to post-modern to performance art to cultural hybrids.

Some of our other activities include low-tech “bare bones” performances in New York City as well as in the surrounding area, a forum online for the exchange of ideas and information, and an opportunity each year to apply for a scholarship to Jacob’s Pillow.

The first free standing American school of Modern Dance established by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn is facing demise. Please read the following article by Joe Gordon and further link to an article in the Riverdale Press that bring attention to this historical, largely forgotten place that has never been landmarked!

American Dance Guild Performance Festival

  • The American Dance Guild will return to live performance with their yearly ADG PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL, their first live production since the Covid pandemic. Return, Renew, Rejoice! will take place over four evenings, Dec 1 - Dec 4, 2022 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater. The work of 34 contemporary choreographers will be shown.

  • ADG Honors this year will go to choreographers Phyllis Lamhut and the late H.T. Chen, winners of ADG’s Lifetime Achievement Award. An Award for Distinguished Service to the Field will be presented to Christine Jowers, founder of The Dance Enthusiast.

  • The Festival will include a presentation of three historic modern dances. "Shuvi Nafshi" (Return O My Soul Unto Thee - 1947) by Hadassah, reconstructed by Steven Vendola will be performed by Mary Ford Sussman, "Pizzicati” (1916), a rarely seen work by Michio Ito, restaged by Bonnie Oda Homsey courtesy of Los Angeles Dance Foundation and licensed with the Michio Ito Foundation, Inc., will be performed by Kaoru Ikeda. In addition, “Concertino” (1955), with choreography by the late Pauline Koner, will be presented by Gwendolyn Bye’s Dance Fusion Company from Philadelphia.

The ADG Festival’s participating artists represent a wide variety of aesthetic and cultural voices, reflecting the broad spectrum of American dance life and the diverse character of dance today. Works by mature as well as emerging artists will be shown.

Young dancers are encouraged to apply for our annual scholarship to the renowned summer dance school at Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Mass. This is a great annual opportunity for young dancers provided by the board of the American Dance Guild in collaboration with Jacobs Pillow. It was formerly known as the Erna Lindner-Gilbert Scholarship, and the Fannie Weiss scholarship, in honor of the women members who founded the scholarship.
